Revolutionary changes in the Academy's traditional curriculum began with 1959-60 Academic Year when, for the first time, provision was made for incoming midshipmen to validate previous college-level work and to sub- stitute alternate or elective courses for equivalent courses in the basic curric- ulum.

By virtue of an Act of Congress approved on 8 July 1939, the Superintendent was authorized to confer the degree upon all living graduates.

Thirteen have been selected from the Class of 1969.

The 1964-65 Academic Year brought additional improvements in the Academy's administrative organization and the most significant of recent changes in its curriculum.

Every midshipman is required to complete the courses of the core curriculum (or validate comparable college-level work) and to complete a minor.
